What Are Passkeys?
Passkeys replace passwords with cryptographic authentication tied to your wallet. Instead of typing a password, you verify your identity with biometrics (fingerprint, face scan) or a hardware security key. They can’t be phished, guessed, or reused across breaches.
Pera Wallet brings this security model to your wallet and beyond, and Liquid Auth, a decentralized passkey standard, support is coming soon. Once set up, you can use your Pera passkeys to sign in to supported websites and services — without creating yet another password.
Key points:
- Passkeys are available for Universal Wallets only (not Legacy Algo25 wallets)
- Your passkey is derived from your Universal Wallet and stored securely on your device — Pera never sees it
- You can create, view, and delete passkeys from the Pera app
Setting Up Passkeys in Pera
Step 1: Open Settings
- Open the Pera Wallet app
- Navigate to the More section
- Tap the Settings gear icon in the upper-right corner
Step 2: Access the Passkeys Menu
In the Settings menu, tap on Passkeys.
Step 3: Enable Passkeys on Your Device (If Needed)
If passkeys aren’t already enabled on your device, you’ll need to turn them on:
- On iOS: Go to Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords
- On Android: Go to Settings > Passwords, Passkeys & Accounts
Step 4: Register Your Passkey
Once passkeys are enabled on your device, return to Pera Wallet. You can now register passkeys using your Universal Wallet.
Using Passkeys to Sign In to Websites
Passkeys aren’t just for Pera — you can use them to authenticate on any website that supports the WebAuthn standard.
From Your Desktop
- On a website that supports passkeys, start the passkey registration or sign-in process
- The site may prompt you to use a phone or security key
- Select Save Another Way (or the equivalent option in your browser)
- Select Use a phone, tablet, or security key
- A QR code will appear on your desktop screen
- Open your phone’s camera and scan the QR code
- Select your Pera Account from the passkey list
- Authenticate with biometrics to confirm
You’re now signed in — no password typed, no password stored.
Managing Your Passkeys
View stored passkeys
- Open Pera Wallet → More → Settings → Passkeys
- View all registered passkeys
Delete a passkey
- From the Passkeys screen, locate the passkey you want to remove
- Tap to delete and confirm
Deleting a passkey from Pera removes it from your device. If Cloud Backup is on, Pera asks whether to Keep it or Delete from Cloud Backup; deleting from the backup removes it permanently. If you used it to sign in to a website, you’ll need to set up a new authentication method on that site.
Why Passkeys Matter
No more passwords to steal
Passwords get leaked in data breaches, intercepted through phishing, or guessed through brute force. Passkeys are cryptographic — they can’t be reused, can’t be phished, and never leave your device.
Decentralized with Liquid Auth
Unlike passkeys from Apple or Google that are tied to their ecosystems, Pera’s passkeys come from your own Universal Wallet, and Liquid Auth — an open, decentralized standard — support is coming soon. Your authentication isn’t locked into any single company’s infrastructure.
Faster and easier
Tap your fingerprint or glance at your phone. That’s it. No typing, no 2FA codes, no password managers.
FAQ
Do I need a Universal Wallet for passkeys?
Yes. Passkeys are only available for Universal Wallets (BIP-39 HD). If you’re using a Legacy Algo25 wallet, consider creating a Universal Wallet to access this feature.
What if I lose my phone?
Passkeys derived from a Universal Wallet restore with the wallet itself, or with your Cloud Backup. Older passkeys can’t be restored from your recovery passphrase: in Passkeys, Pera lists them under Recovery isn’t available. Remove each one and create it again on its site, but only while you can still sign in to that site another way. Passkeys are an authentication convenience layer, not a replacement for your recovery passphrase.
Can I use passkeys on both mobile and desktop?
You create and manage passkeys on Pera Mobile, but you can use them to authenticate on desktop websites by scanning a QR code with your phone.
What is Liquid Auth?
Liquid Auth is a decentralized authentication framework that brings passkey-style authentication to blockchain. Protocol support is coming soon in the app. Learn more at liquidauth.com.
